Aerial Photography

Aerial Photography  Aerial Photography is photography that is shot from a considerable height above and apart from the ground. There are various ways in which aerial photographs may be taken. The photographer may be air-bound in a hot-air balloon, glider, parachute, airplane, helicopter and so on, or the camera may be a remote operated one attached to a kite, a rocket, a model airplane, a real airplane wing, even homing pigeons or the photographs may be taken from a satellite.

History of Aerial Photography:
Aerial photography became a possibility with the invention of the hot-air balloon, the airplane and the camera. Two early pioneers of aerial photography were Nadar and Fred Zinn, two separate individuals in separate periods of time. Nadar, in 1858, became the first person to take aerial photographs. A keen balloonist, he navigated his hot-air balloon over Paris, took photographs of the city and began a successful business selling the photographs to the general public. Fred Zinn was an aviator during the First World War, who flew first with the French Armée de l'Air, then with the American Lafayette Escadrille and then with the U.S. Army Air Service. He began taking taking aerial reconnaissance photographs of enemy positions while out on bombing missions – hot-air balloons were already being used for reconnaissance photography, but Fred Zinn's photographs, taken from his plane while flying directly overhead the enemy lines and sometimes swooping down low, were much clearer and detailed. Fred Zinn was decorated by the French government for his enterprising spirit and bravery.

Uses of Aerial Photography:
People got along well enough before aerial photography arrived on the scene, but, once it had, it became a matter of 'Well, if you could invent it, we can find some use for it." The foremost use of aerial photography is for providing topographic information, and this has made life easier for cartographers, engineers, site-planners and surveyors. Taking snapshots of the earth in this manner is called photogrammetry.

So now aerial photography finds the following uses -
The land masses are photographed from the air, studied carefully and then the information gleaned is used for drawing up topographic maps.
Aerial photographs are used to study the shape of the land mass so as to understand how it can be put to good use.
Aerial photography is used to spot and/or record the features of historical and archaeological sites.
Aerial photography is used to carry out environmental studies.
Aerial photography is used for civilian and military surveillance purposes. For example, monitoring the state of traffic along a busy route.
Aerial photography is used for recreational purposes. For example, gliding enthusiasts taking photographs, either with a hand-held camera or one attached to the glider.

Famous Aerial Photographers

Famous Aerial Photographers 2011 :  Owing to the sort of creativity and adventurous nature that aerial photography needs, not many famous photographers could gain phenomenal fame. But there are some, who have made a mark in this field and inspired many to try their hand at aerial photography. Without further prelude, let's head straight and find out more about some of the best aerial photographers of all times.

American photographer James Wallace Black was professionally known as J.W. Black. He began his career as a painter but soon after, shifted his interest towards photography. J.W. Black was a renowned portrait photographer, however, it is important for you to know, that he was the first American aerial photographer. Two years after Nadar, in the year 1860, Black attempted to capture images of Boston, from "Queen of the Air" - a tethered balloon. After that, aerial photography was used in the American Civil War, by the Union Army. Black later became the authorized user of candle powered Laterna Magica or Magic Lantern, which was an image projector that produced popular images of the Great Boston Fire.

American born William Garnett, was one of the famous aerial and landscape photographers. Garnett began his career in photography in the year 1938 as an independent commercial photographer as well as a successful graphic designer. During 1944, he worked for Lockheed aircraft company to create training films for US Signal Corps. Soon afterward, Garnett purchased his own plane for the sake of aerial photography. He earned critical attention as well as first three Guggenheim fellowships for his landscape photography. He purchased Cessna 170B and used Pentax 6X7 for captures.

Born in Paris, France; Yann Arthus-Bertrand is a famous photographer, environmentalist and journalist. A man of versatility, Yann Arthus-Bertrand tried his hand as an actor and assistant director for French movies. After giving up on it, in 1976 he stayed amongst Masai tribes in Masai Mara National Park, for close observation of the behavior of lion's families. In the year 1991, he established Altitude Agency which is the world's first bank of aerial photography. In the year 1994, he began capturing images of various states of the Earth, in collaboration with UNESCO. For which he used hot air balloons and helicopters. He released a book of these endeavors in the form of a book named Earth from Above. In the year 2008, Earth from Above was released on DVDs.

Kite Aerial Photography

Kite Aerial Photography  2011 :  The camera can be connected directly to the kite, but normally it is fixed to an adjustable rig which is suspended from the kite line at a distance from the kite. This distance subdues the excessive movement which is transmitted from the kite to the camera and helps the kite fly higher and into stable air. Usually the camera is adjusted to a high shutter speed to minimize motion blur. Normally for aerial photography, the suspension method is used, as it allows the rig to automatically align itself under the kite line, which further helps take photographs that orient perfectly with the horizon.

Shutter Release and Camera Positioning

Depending upon the type of camera and complexity of the rig electronics, there are different techniques to release the shutter of the camera. These techniques may comprise of a radio controlled servo to press the release button, an infrared signal or wired connection to inform the camera to release the shutter, or a camera's inbuilt intervalometer. The camera fitted within a frame should have the rig designed in such as way that it can rotate horizontally and vertically and can change the picture format from portrait to landscape, by rotating the camera. Alterations in these angles can be made by manually setting the rig on the ground or by adjusting the rig using a remote control or an automatic controller in the rig while it is airborne. Normally a radio control system is used which has servos that readily adapt to adjust the rig positioning. Many automatic controllers have been manufactured that can click a photo, move the camera by a set angle, take the next photo, etc.

Kites

Single lined kites are the most commonly used kites as they are highly stable, provide very long line lengths and require minimum intervention from the flyer. But as the weight increases, particular designs with extra flying abilities, such as the flying angle, wind range, line pull, and ease of launch are considered. Some of the widely used designs are delta, rokkaku, parafoil and the helikite. Out of all these, the simplest kite to employ for KAP is the helikite, as it is very light and flies in an extremely stable manner with or without wind.

This involved first preparing a transparent and sticky Collodion Solution - discovered in 1846 by the Frenchman Louis-Phillipe Manard (also separately by the American Dr. J P Maynard in 1848) and made by treating raw cotton with nitric and sulphuric acids (this treated cotton was known as Pyroxlin), dissolving it in ether and ethanol (alcohol) mixed with an iodiser (a mixture of iodide and bromide). Later somebody became innovative and began the time-saving trend of marketing this solution ready-made. This solution, incidentally, was used not just by photographers, but also as an adhesive liquid bandage by Surgeons. The Collodion Solution was poured over the glass plate and then the plate was tilted this way and that until it became entirely and evenly coated with Collodion. The excess, depending on how extravagant or thrifty you were feeling, went down the drain or back into the bottle for future use.

The glass plate, after a few minutes when the Collodion Solution had coagulated somewhat , was immersed into a container with a Silver Nitrate Solution. The iodide and bromide in the Collodion Solution underwent a chemical reaction with the Silver Nitrate to form a photo-sensitive Silver Halide coating over the glass. The back of the plate was carefully wiped clean of the Silver Nitrate Solution.

Now you quickly inserted the wet, dripping glass plate into a light-proof glass-plate holder that in turn was slid into the camera. Next thing to do was slide out the removable holder cover that covered the glass plate. Now you were all set to photograph. It was imperative you got your work done while the plate remained wet.

So now you rechecked your subject through the view-finder. If it was an inanimate subject, no problem, but the live ones had probably shifted around by now and you had to get them back in position. Then you removed the camera lens cap and allowed light to stream into the camera and strike the photo-sensitive, chemically treated glass plate inside. The session ended when you replaced the lens cap. The key to good photography was knowing the exact amount of time between removing and replacing. The subjects to be photographed - I again speak of the live ones here - had to have a certain amount of talent for remaining absolutely still for the twenty seconds to five minutes that were sometimes needed for proper exposure - not just remaining still, but maintaining the same expression throughout.

After exposure, the cover of the glass-plate holder was slid back in place and the holder was removed from the camera. Back under the cover of the dark-room tent, the glass plate was extracted, held over a tray, and the Developer, a previously prepared solution of Iron Sulphate and Acetic Acid or Pyrogallol, was poured all over it and rolled around over the plate for several minutes until the image was developed. The image was formed by the Developer reacting with the Silver Halide that had been just exposed to light and transforming it into a dark metallic Silver; the Silver Halide grains that had not reacted to the light earlier remained unaffected. After this treatment, the glass plate was rinsed with water to remove the Developer. Now it was safe to bring it out in the open. The glass plate was next placed into a tray containing the Fixing Agent, either a Sodium Thiosulphate Solution or that of Potassium Cyanide; you had to be very, very careful in case of the latter since it was poisonous. The Fixing Agent got rid of the unexposed Silver Halide. The plate was then again rinsed in water - this time to remove the Fixing Agent. Then sometimes a mixture of the Developer and Silver Nitrate was applied as an Intensifier. Now the plate was allowed to dry.

Catalog Photography Tips

Catalog Photography Tips 2011 :  Before going on with the final take in catalog photography, you need to consider some important points that will enhance the visual and detail of the product in the catalog. You do have the choice of using just the product or the product with a background in the catalog. As per business sale records, it is concluded that products which do not have backgrounds are likely to sell more than those with backgrounds. You can discuss with your advertising team to choose which concept would most suit product promotion. Another important point to think on is the lighting and dimension of the product pictured.

Try to give the product a more dimensional look, such that the viewer will feel that it is actually kept in front of him. You should also give thought to which design would you consider using for the catalog. There are many different designs available at the agency providing the service. However, it is recommended to not use those designs as they might be used by other companies. Coming up with your own ideas for the designs would really make the product catalog unique. Also try not to click the picture with a group of products. This will decrease the focus and attention each individual product is supposed to get.

Catalog Photography Pricing

When it comes to catalog photography pricing; it depends on a wide range of factors such as the type of product, agency, group shots, or background modifications, etc. If the product is a portable one, the prices will be less as compared to those for a product which requires a considerable space, like a car. The agency may even charge more if you opt for colorful backgrounds or group shots.

Newborn Photography Ideas

Newborn Photography Ideas 2011 :  Styles
Newborn baby photograph ideas revolve around three basic styles, environmental, clean and classic and props and parents. Environmental style deals with using the baby's home, nursery or hospital as a backdrop. This renders a very unique and personal touch to the photos. Another option is to capture the baby's interaction with her parents. Such photos reflect the closeness of the family and the special bond shared by the baby and her parents. You can also include the baby's older siblings if any. Clean and classic style is the most popular type of photography as it captures the baby in her most natural state. The infant is often naked, placed on a bean bag with an array of blankets around her.All these objects are used to prop the baby to get a desired pose. Parents also make for great props, since the baby is most comfortable in the arms of her parents.

Location
During the first few weeks mothers are very reluctant to take the baby outdoors. Hence, your options will be confined to the baby's home or the hospital. Nonetheless, these two places offer unique and most personalized locations for baby photos. If you are permitted to shoot outdoors, a backdrop of lush garden can make for the most breathtaking photographs. You can also look out for some unusual newborn photo shoot ideas such as underwater photography to reflect the marine instincts of the baby.

Setup
Natural setup is the most practical option when you think about infant photography ideas. Since, infant's eyes are very sensitive to light, you should avoid light on the baby's head. Also, turn off the flash of the camera as well as the red eye reduction feature. Set up the photo shoot near a window or any other source of natural light.

Newborn Photography Tips

You should always look for innovative ideas for newborn pictures. Babies swaddled in blankets on their back is the most common of all newborn photography poses. Instead look for various props and adjust the position of the baby. A pose with the baby's back towards the chest of her father and head resting on the inside of elbow makes for a remarkable picture. A baby looking over the shoulder of her mother also looks picture perfect. However, do not force the baby to pose in a particular way. Be as gentle as possible while adjusting her tiny limbs. If you are using bean bag to prop the baby, make sure it is not too soft, else you will have difficulty keeping it stable. Infants do not have any control over their expressions or movements, hence you need to have a great amount of patience. In any case, do not disturb the schedule of the baby. Consult her parents regarding the time you can find her awake and happy.

Professional Photography Accessories

Professional Photography Accessories  Studio photography is entirely different from outdoor photography and so are the required professional photography accessories.

Lamp Reflectors
Reflectors are used to focus light on a particular area but cannot control the intensity of light. They are fitted behind the lamp. These lamp reflectors are very useful for product photography. To know more about product photography, go through these product photography tips. They are usually made up of aluminum and come in different sizes. They have to be used very carefully.

Softboxes
Softboxes are another way of creating effects in photography by controlling light. They do it by passing light through diffusing material. They are commonly lined with some reflective material like aluminum to help reflection. If you want to use it with continuous hot lighting, take precautions to avoid fire risk.

Laptop with Photoshop
This has nothing to do with photography, but it has a great deal to do with the final product which is also the most important thing. Adobe Photoshop offers some great options to improve the photographs. But use it only for small changes and don't tweak the picture too much as there are ways to detect such manipulations.

Umbrellas
Umbrellas in photography are used to create a diffused effect with soft shadows and no harsh edges. It is done by bouncing, reflecting, or softening light falling on the object to be photographed. There are two types of umbrellas, one is bounce and the other is shoot through. The bounce umbrella bounces light back to the subject and a shoot through umbrella aims the light at the subject through the umbrella, giving a softbox effect.

Photography Accessories for the Outdoors

When you are capturing the outdoors there are some accessories that you just can't do without. Check out this list below.

Remote Shutter Release Cable
As its name suggests a remote shutter release cable helps take pictures remotely, that is you don't have to be behind the camera holding it. It is a great equipment for taking self-pictures. Your camera may have a timer option, but that is not a very flexible way when it comes to professional photography.

Sturdy Tripod
A tripod is used to give the camera stability. It is used more for still-life photography. A tripod is also useful in attaining proper framing of the image or when more than one image is being made of the same scene. The shots are clearer and blur-free.

Photography Basics of Composition

Photography Basics of Composition  Understanding the basics of composition will greatly help to shoot better pictures. One way to compose your picture is to fill the frame, second way is to understand the rule of thirds. To understand the rule of thirds imagine two equally spaced vertically lines and two equally spaced horizontal lines in a rectangle. The four areas where the lines intersect with each other are the points where one should try to place their subject. As these are the areas where the eye is first compelled to look at. Read more about, beginner's guide to photography.

Basics Controls of Digital Cameras

There are many auto modes on the camera, that allows the user to just point and shoot, without changing any exposure setting. Some modes like landscape, sports, night landscape, night portrait, party, sunset, etc. Another mode is macro, which allow you to take macro shots, which allows you to capture the details and texture in close-up shots. You can switch to manual mode, and play around with the ISO, aperture and shutter speed settings, and control the exposure. There are controls in digital camera, that allow you to shoot in sepia, black and white and other color modes, than the usual color pictures mode. Certain cameras for digital photography even offer the image stabilization option, which should be always kept on as it reduces the chance of blurring the shot.

Basics Of Photography ideas

Basics Of Photography ideas 2011 :  Whether it comes to basics of film photography or basics of digital photography, understanding the exposure triangle is imperative. The exposure triangle constitute the ISO, the shutter speed and the aperture. Play with the different setting of these three elements, and review you shots. Many digital cameras have the option that shows the exposure as 0 (zero), which means the picture is properly exposed, underexposed setting is displayed with the minus sign, and overexposed with plus. So, always frame your shots that have a zero exposure setting to click well lit shots by adjusting the below basics of photography elements and their settings..

ISO: The ISO is the measure of a digital camera's sensor's sensitivity to light. The figures like 100, 200, 400, etc. are the setting used to display ISO in a camera. Keep the ISO higher when there is less light, or the subject is moving, maintain a high ISO to get more sharpness and less noise in your shots and when there is sufficient light to expose your subject.

Shutter Speed: Shutter speed is defined as the amount of times the shutter of the camera is left open. Shutter speed is measured in fractions and figures like 1/1500,1/250,1/60, 1/8, etc. are used. Some cameras even allow slow shutter speeds of 1 second to 30 seconds, and few digital cameras shutter speed setting have 'bulb' setting that allows the user to keep the shutter open for as long as the user wants. For shutter speeds higher than 1/8 you will need a tripod or the image stabilizer option. Faster shutter speed will allow you to capture the motion lines, like the traffic lines. Slower shutter speeds will allow you to freeze motion, like water droplets falling.

Aperture: This is the size of the opening in the lens of the camera. It is measured in f-stops, and you will see setting like f/2.8, f/4, f/5.6, f/22, etc. One important point to remember is that f/22 is actually smaller than the setting of f/2.8, which means that when you there are smaller denominators there is larger f-stops and vice versa. Keeping the aperture small, will help you to create a depth of field. Keeping an aperture that is large, will help to focus on the complete scene.

Editorial Photography Ideas

Editorial Photography Ideas 2011 :  It is rightly said that a picture is worth a thousand words. To know how to take editorial photographs, you have to know what is editorial photography. Editorial photography in the simplest term is about photographs that supports the printed words. This photograph should be linked to the story or article in a cohesive way. You can take a good editorial photograph by thinking out of the box.

A career in editorial photography is best suited for people who have the ability to interpret ideas and take highly original and evocative pictures that tell a story. Editorial photography jobs are plenty but it is a highly competitive world and only the most ingenuous and creative people can survive. The basis of a good editorial photograph lies in the idea. An idea will develop into a story and that one idea can generate lot of editorial style photographs. Editorial photography is done both on the field and in the studios. It is more difficult to shoot editorial photographs in the field since there are a lot of variables involved. But some of the best editorial photography ideas can be found on the field. The location of editorial photographs should not be limited to beautiful hills and meadows as you can find inspiration from even a busy street. Editorial photography ideas can stem from the most mundane of places. A street urchin selling flowers in a busy traffic intersection, a street performer or a couple on the sidewalk make powerful editorial photograph ideas.

This does not mean that if you are doing an article about first time brides in their forties, you need to put a photograph of a middle aged bride in a bridal gown. There are many ways of showing this. One good way to show the trend of first time brides who walk down the aisle well into their forties is to show the bride with her father, or to take a picture of a intricate bridal dress with the bride applying an anti aging cream. There are many ways of interpreting a story and how you translate it in your editorial photograph lies with you. A recent article about diabetes caught my eye as it had a good editorial photograph. It showed a photograph of a plastic glass with small holes in it. The glass was filled up with powdered sugar which was steadily falling out through the small holes in the glass. Creative photography ideas like this are real gems and they help the reader to connect with the story.
